The 11th Annual Neighbourhood Week was officially opened on 28th November 2012 by the President of Ireland, Mr. Michael D. Higgins.
The President, accompanied by his wife Sabina, were warmly welcomed to the Centre at 5pm on 28th November. The couple were presented with a tour of the mosque by the Centre’s senior members of staff before proceeding to the multi-purpose hall where he cut the ribbon to launch Neighbourhood Week 2012 entitled 'Timeless Islamic Art'.
After an introduction from Mr. Shaheen Ahmed of the Islamic Cultural Centre, the President gave a speech that was well-received by the many attendees. Mr. Higgins expressed his delight at being invited to open Neighbourhood Week 2012 before discussing the importance of Neighbourhood Week and community-relations in an increasingly multicultural Ireland.
Following the President’s speech, the CEO of the Centre, Dr. Nooh Al-Kaddo delivered some words of appreciation to the President for his visit. The Presidential couple then viewed all of the Islamic Art on display, met with ambassadors from Muslim-majority countries and chatted with many members of the Muslim and local community in attendance.
Neighbourhood Week 2012 is entitled 'Timeless Islamic Art' and it will feature internationally renowned artists in Embroidery, Brass Embellishment and Calligraphy who will showcase their art, perform live demonstration as well as offer articles for sale.
