On Saturday the 1st of October Dr Ali Selim gave a talk presenting his understanding of the Muslim Identity to the Muslim community in Ireland. In his talk Dr Selim highlighted that it refers to a form of awareness and involvement in religious ideas and values, as well as awareness of belonging to Islam and Muslims. He stressed that despite the fact that it forms the most substantial layer of our identity, our identity is made of a number of layers e.g. professional, family and national layers. These layers may coexist or be in conflict dependent on understanding and interpretation in practice. Dr Selim stressed that the Muslim identity faces serious intrinsic and extrinsic challenges, intellectual, social and political. He stated that adherence to your Muslim identity protects you against assimilation and makes you a valid asset to your society. The floor was opened to questions and answers at the end.
