Want to learn a new language or just brush up on your school French? Or would you like to improve your computer skills or acquire new ones? If so, we at the Open Learning Centre can help you. We're located in the Central Library in the Ilac Centre and provide free self-learning courses in both language and computer skills.

You can learn 112 languages here on Cd-Rom format including Arabic, Cornish, Irish, Esperanto, Greek, Lithuanian and Zulu!

We also have online language learning using the Council of Europe approved Tell Me More Campus program. This provides training in  8 languages through 18 interface languages. The 8 languages are UK English, US English, French, Italian, German, Dutch, Spanish and Latin American Spanish. The interface languages include Polish, Hungarian, Korean and Japanese.

In addition, we stock reference books related to The Cambridge English Exams such as IELTS and First Certificate. Some of these have audio cds or cd-roms and can be accessed on our computers here. Also, there are 8 conversation exchanges held every week and we stock a selection of foreign newspapers and magazines.

For computer skills training we can offer you ECDL5 software to study Microsoft Office applications and self-learning programs for basic computer skills such as Internet and email. There is also software to learn typing and to practice for the Driver Theory Test.

For all courses a Certificate of Completion is given after 50 hours of study.
