The Youth Department had the pleasure of welcoming Sali Abouhagar who qualified with her Bachelor's degree in nutrition for a talk entitled ''Back to Nutribasics'', on Sunday September 29th during the senior youth club time. It was open to the youth 12+ and their mothers/guardians.
The talk was extremely interesting. Sali began by reminding us about what Islam teaches us about food and emphasising how important it is to have a happy and healthy relationship with food. She took us through the food pyramid and the portion sizes that we should really be eating. This was a surpise to the group. Sali also mentioned the importance of keeping hydrated, and that if we start to feel thirsty, this is our body telling us that we need water! We should not be waiting until we feel thirsty to drink, but continue to sip water throughout the day. Children should be drinking at least 1.6L a day and adults 2.5L. The importance of sleep was also emphasised. People may be surprised by this, but if we do not get enough sleep, this will also lead us to making bad food choices.
The floor was open at the end for questions and answers. We really look forward to having Sali back again! She has an instagram page for any of you are on instagram @thenutritionistinthewhitescarf where you can find more information and gems on nutrition.
We had a balance of snacks at the end for people to treat themselves to.
Attached you can find the food pyramid for more information.
